  • Proper firearm training safety is the key to being safe with a firearm as these young ladies. Most of those accidentally shot are those that have never had any such training. Nice shooting ladies!

  • Well, my father taught my three older brothers and myself what gun safety was when we were 9, 8, 7, and 5, in 1964. He was a paratrooper and put us all through the course. We all received a new .22 on our 10th birthday but we could go small game hunting alone at 9. We never acted crazy but we also never had to shoot an animal twice. We had the John Wayne outlook. "Ya never take a gun out unless you intend to use it. You never use a gun unless you intend to kill something."

  • good for you and good shootin', girls! you'll probably get a lot of stupid comments about how bad guns are, etc. they just don't get the fact that true Gun Control means being able to hit your intended target. ;)

  • Guns are rife in the US. They are part of the American culture and nothing you say will change that. There will always be guns in the US. If they were outright banned you'd have a black market so large you'd never notice the difference. It's best to know how to handle one correctly rather than have your kid take his/her own head clean off in an accident, or to accidentally kill someone else.

I'd say Dad is doing the right thing here and I respect him for it.

    • @PhilD i hope you're right for i fear if it can happen in the UK and Australia it can happen here, but i've got a spot picked out deep in the woods where i can bury my guns, and claim to have sold them years earlier, should the "authorities" come to confiscate them

    • @desirefirst I don't think you've got much to worry about. I'm not so sure what happened in Aus, but what happened in the UK was that we didn't have guns for self defense. It was target shooting or hunting and that was it really. The US attitude is completely different. We banned semi auto here in the 80's after the Hungerford massacre, and then handguns in 1997 after the school shooting which happened just up the road from me. The UK just never really had a love affair with guns, and self defen More..

    • @PhilD It didn't make any sense banning guns in this country either (to those who actually sat down and thought about and didn't get swept along in the hysteria following Dunblane) handgun crime has more than doubled since the 'ban'. AND its in our constitution (1689) which the US bill of rights is partially based on that we can have guns for self-defence. If fact this right was only convienently 'forgotten' about in 1953 :(

    • @Dunblane_Truth_Seeker Dunblane was used as a convenient knee jerk decision plan. Get em while they mourn. I agree with you. Why should law abiding gun owners be punished for the acts of the criminals? My point was that self defense isn't so high up on the list here when it concerns guns.

At least we've still got a few ranges left.

  • You taught them well Dad. My 16 yr old daughter has already shot many guns including my 12 gauge Mossey. It's fun to watch them shoot.
