  • Nothing says stupid like shooting a mortar or anything at a Kiowa warrior.
A Kiowa is used for Arty and rotor gunfire support, no doubt the counter fire took out the moded mortars (RPG's fired straight up) and the shooters.

  • Good old flack. Hope they don't figure out a better targeting solution or they could be a problem. The chopper in the video looked like it was coming in hot so I wonder if it didn't take a hit in the hydraulics or something.

  • I think it got hit pretty badly... one can easily see it went down too fast.

    • There are RPG rounds that self destruct after 450 or 900 meters of flight. They might be able to pull something like that with those with some planing. But even so, few machine guns would still be more likely to do the job.

If that realy was a mortar then i think they used timed fuses so they will explode after certain time after the launch.

  • And since we were talking about aircraft lost to enemy fire: during the Battle of France, the Luftwaffe lost 1,129 aircraft (now I know "aircraft" remains unchanged in the plural...) to enemy action (and 299 in accidents). French alone shot down more than 600 German aicraft, mostly in air battle -- it was within 1 month and a half, between 10 May and 22 June 1940... The rest was destroyed by the British and other allies.

A least 27,000 German soldiers were killed in the Battle of Fran More..

  • I was hopingthe little bird was gonna make it, but to those who said fail, get outta denial. Didnt you see the black trail of smoke as it lost altitude. We are really fighting a formidable enemy. Afghanistan isnt know as "the graveyard of empires" for nothing. Also on same date, 4 NATO troops killed in heli "crash" These are my brothers in arms, and I hate seeing this shit, but what doesnt kill us only makes us stronger.

    • "We are really fighting a formidable enemy."

Ok, this is a joke :)

(In the very unlikely case it wouldn't be, let me just ask 2 simple questions:

      1. Do these enemies wear uniforms (or any other PERMANENT item identifying them as enemies)?

      2. In 8.5 years, how many helicopters/planes did they shoot down or badly damage?)

    • As of Feb 2010, 72 rotary winged aircraft lost, 14 to enemy fire. Including 3 Blackhawks, 7 Chinooks, 1 HH 60 Pavehawk, 1 MI 24, 1 Kiowa, and 1 Seaking. Also 1 Harrier, and 20 other fixed wing aircraft lost. Although none of these were to hostile fire while airborne. This doesnt include "contractor" aircraft losses. On April 6th 2005 18 service members where killed in one downing alone, so you do the math. All our effort went into Iraq, not Afghanistan. Now that it is, we are seeing su More..

    • "Your right about one thing"

==> Actually, after reading your whole comment, I'm still right about EVERYTHING I said.

      1. About the number of aircrafts lost to enemy fire:

So, you said 14... 14 / 8.5 years = 1.6 lost to enemy fire per year... OMG... what a FORMIDABLE enemy... :DD

Oh, yes, "this doesn't include "contractor" aircraft losses"?... hmmm, fair enough... let's say 7 more lost to enemy fire for the contractors, does it seem reasonable to you? So... 1 More..
