Safe Mode: On
Gentle Giant - Cogs In Cogs/Proclamation Live 1974

Progressive rock at its most indulgent.

This is from a Belgian studio recording, with audience, aired on German
ZDF television in 1974. It can be found on a DVD entitled Giant On The Box.

These guys are musicians' musicians. When I was a kid I listened to
their stuff in utter, slack-jawed amazement, wondering how five guys
could create so much sound. Then I would return to my guitar and somehow
avoid smashing it to bits.

One imagines middle-ages England--lutes and troubadors, castles and trebuchets. Check out the albums Octopus, Interview, The Power And The Glory, among others.

  • I never was too into progressive rock back then, but nice bit of funk in that groove. Still, not as accessible as Yes. I suppose early Genesis was a good example as well, but Jethro Tull pretty much ruled in overall musicianship. It's really sad that level has never been approached in recent decades. Thanks for the exposure.

  • With their full-side-LP songs and 10-minute drum solos, Prog Rockers like this gave birth to the necessary fresh air of punk.

No doubt about it. I was in L.A. when the 'decline of western civilization' was happening--The Germs, Fear, Circle Jerks, Black Flag. A breath of fresh air it truly was. Then the eighties happened, the most godawful decade in the history of rock. I loved how the 'Seattle scene' wiped out all the hairspray and spandex. Full circle, eh?

Peart is a superior technician. I've seen Rush many times. They were a bit canned, though, kind of like The Cars on steroids.

Bill Bruford remains my favorite drummer.

  • This is why i don't really care for progressive music.
Great musicians, but they have no feel to what they write.

I'm sorry you feel that way, and while I tend to disagree, I do understand. Too many notes. An old friend used to call them Gentle Creep, and felt Neil Young could say so much more with one note than these guys with all their pretentiousness.

      Still--I love it all.
