The New Coal Miner

another mining film (from the days before video) showing the Miners of South Wales in the New Atomic Age (a quote from the film). hard working and tough playing men who earn their bread from the arduous and dangerous toil of digging deep within the earth for that which society needs and craves - fuel.

(note; not to be confused with 'New Mining Equipment' from April of this year, they shared a few frames of the new machinery from the USA but it's a different film entirely)

  • "A few more men can straighten their backs and throw their shovel on the scrap heap." A great way to describe permanent unemployment.

  • if we had kept the mines instead of burning all our natural north sea gas we would have developed carbon capture technology and we wouldent be importing LPG from the Arabs FFS and not having our domestic bill rising at 15%-20%a year we had 150 years of domestic natural gas supplies burnt in 20 for cheep non coal electricity gas power stations were banned until gas privatisation thanks thatcher and you tory scum.

  • "Human machines" the narrator called them. I admire these men but I could not work in those conditions for any amount of money!

  • Great clip to watch but also sad when you look back at the days when coal was king in UK.Thatcher and her minions saw fit to decimate the mining industry with no foresight whatsoever, consequently we are now faced with ever increasing fuel bills and are reliant on others for our fossil fuel. There is plenty of coal left that could have been mined to this day and kept industry alive, due to the venom of one bitch good hard working men were thrown on the scrap heap and communities were left to decay More..
