  • Used to have nightmares about a red dawn and getting nuked by the USSR as a kid. I remember a pamphlet about MAD and the cold war. showed the aftermath of a nuke attack in cartoon, and all these people with no skin..fucked up.

    • @moanranger You have to be REAL careful how you stop an asteroid. Deflection is the best way IMHO. Deflect it's orbit, do NOT blow it up. It would not take much to deflect an asteroid. A tiny nudge is all it takes. It could be a FAR worse situation if you blow up the asteroid.

      Deflecting *is* the better option--if there is time. Otherwise, direct obliteration with massive megatons would be all we'd have left.

      I know the counter-argument: The Earth would then be devastated by a swarm of celestial "buckshot", instead of one big rock.

      But isn't that at least preferable? I'd rather get hit by a spray of buckshot (from a long distance shooter) than a rifled slug.

      Even better, why use just one bomb? Say we simultaneously detonate two 50-megaton+ warhea More..

  • They never actually detonated it at full power, the one they set off was only half strength at around 25 megaton. It had the potential to be much bigger though.
