PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- An 84-year-old
woman (seen in blue jacket) is in stable condition after the car she was driving crashed to
two fences on Portland's waterfront before ending up in in the harbor.
The accident happened just before 1:30 pm. Police say the woman
Portland was driving down India Street towards the waterfront when her
car blew a stop sign on India Street, crashed through the fence and
continued into the harbor near the Ocean Gateway terminal.
A number of people saw the accident happen and jumped in to help
Nixon. Police were on patrol at the Maine State Pier, and firefighters
also were training nearby and arrived quickly. Home video shows a woman
being held into Nixon's car and pulling her out just before the car was
submerged.
A number of the good samaritans had to be treated for hypothermia at the scene.
Police say they may not know what caused the crash for a couple of days.

Remember the old joke by Steven Wright:
My uncle died peacefully in his sleep yesterday.
However, the three passengers in his car died screaming.
