People will never give up their flirtation with
socialist ideas unless they come to understand that the horrors of communism
are necessary consequences of socialism consistently applied.

In The Road to Serfdom, F. A. Hayek explained
incontrovertibly that attempts at comprehensive planning by the state will
necessarily be rejected or lead to greater and greater totalitarian control,
tyranny, and cruelty. This is so because of the need to force people conform to
'the plan.' (See especially is chapter "Why the Worst Get on Top.")

Instead of comparing ideals with ideals and
actual experience with actual experience, those who favour Communism compare
the perfect imaginary ideal of it with concrete, imperfect realities of liberal
capitalism. The actual experience of Communism is truly horrifying.

No one can think about these issues clearly if
they have not recognized the horror of the mountains of bodies involved in
these socialist "experiments." We are surrounded by "slain
innocence" of an unprecedented, unfathomable scale. Yet these dead are
invisible to our culture. Kors' lecture (below) makes the audience feel shame
for the disproportion they place on various injustices. "This is not the
thousands of the Spanish Inquisition; this is not the thousands of the
lynchings of blacks in the American South; this is not even the six million
killed by the Nazi regime, but scores and scores and scores and scores of
millions of dead bodies." Alexander Yakovlev in A Century History of
Violence in Soviet Russia estimates 20 -- 60 million were killed, without
counting the victims of wars in the Soviet Union. Yung Chang and Jon Holliday,
who had access to archives from Mao's associates and the archives of the USSR,
in Mao: the Unknown Story, claims 70 million individuals killed by Mao's
designs and millions more due to starvation.
