An off-duty police officer has died following a shooting Thursday night in East Harlem in what appears to be a case of mistaken identity.
Investigators say it happened around 10:30 p.m. near Second Avenue and 125th Street.
Police say 25-year-old Omar Edwards, a housing officer, left his shift and saw Miguel Santiago breaking into his car. They say Edwards called 911, drew his gun and started chasing Santiago.
Investigators say plainclothes officers responded to the scene when one of them noticed Edwards, drove after him, and fired six times, hitting him in the arm and chest. He was not wearing a bullet proof vest at the time.
Investigators say Edwards was rushed to Harlem Hospital, and was pronounced dead about an hour later.
