Some friendly sand people wishing to stifle free speech have apparently stormed the US Consulate building in Benghazi, Libya's second largest city. Protestors have also entered the US Embassy compound in Cairo. This was as a result of a ridiculous movie named 'Mohammed, Prophet of the Muslims' allegedly produced by none other than Florida's resident foaming-at-the-mouth pastor, Terry Jones (the guy who burnt a Koran a while back despite Defense Secretary Robert M Gates' pleas).
--
Here is what the BBC had to say about the incident in Libya:
'Reports say they were protesting against a US-made film that is allegedly insulting to the Prophet Muhammad, and set fire to the building.
The building is said to have burnt down. It is thought nobody was in the consulate at the time.
Earlier, protesters in Egypt breached the wall at the US embassy in Cairo and tore down a flag over the film.
The film that sparked the protest is said to have been produced by US pastor Terry Jones and co-produced by some Egyptian Copt expatriates.
In the Cairo incident, the American flag, which was flying at half mast to mark the 9/11 attacks, was replaced by an Islamist banner.
Thousands of protesters had gathered outside the US embassy in the Egyptian capital.
Egyptian protesters condemned what they said was the humiliation of the Prophet of Islam under the pretext of freedom of speech.'
--
Here is more on the incident in Cario, Egypt. Here, protesters scaled the walls of the U.S Embassy compound and pulled down the American flag in order to replace it with a "black flag bearing the prayer 'There is no god but Allah and Mohammed is his messenger'". Here is a link to 'The Atlantic' with more on the story in egypt.
--
Here are some clips from the badly produced, but somewhat hilarious film
Here is what some of the Egyptian media had to say. I can't understand any of it ;), but maybe you can.
I will not be deleting any comments, but please try to keep things productive.

I thought about storming the embassy over the bad remake of Total Recall but then I forgot I'm not insane. This Arab Spring is not going to be what stupid fucking idiots thought it would be. Yes the arabs are overthrowing the despots who some of them we support to take power and be our friends....right. Now you have islamists running unopposed in north africa. The new terrorist haven is going to be there.

@The Grim
Personally, I would have supported a raid on the embassy over Total Recall. If you ever decide to go ahead with that plan, count me in ;)
The arab spring has just been one depressing story after another. I mean, way to waste a revolution by just ending up under the control of the freaking Muslim Brotherhood. I tend to think though that generally the revolutions have been hijacked by external groups and small numbers of extremists.
I don't think the majority of people in Syria for More..

@ljamesb I agree with your first three paragraphs, but I have a question on the fourth.
If that were to happen, what sort of political fallout do you believe this would have?
Reading yours and The Grim's post made me realize that North Africa has become a haven. Hell, we all ready have a mess in Somalia that can easily spread. But that's only if they unite.
More than likely I see a lot of fighting amongst all the warlords for a very long time.
I was taking a politics of the future class More..

@ljamesb I disagree with your bit on Syria. They're all crazy, and that shit country is going to end up just as messed up as Egypt and Libya.

I think that Assad is currently the only person ruthless enough to keep control of the country and keep it out of the hands of extremist conservative religious groups. Should his regime fall (I don't necessarily expect that to happen), we will see future repeats of this embassy incident happening in Syria. Freedom of speech in Syria will be further limited and the prospects for Syrians does not look good. I would agree with you that we would see fighting amongst the warlords for s More..

“I condemn in the strongest terms the attack on our mission,” Clinton said in a statement last night. “We are heartbroken by this terrible loss. There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind.”
That's what happens when you destroy secular regimes just because you beleive in your special role in the world.

This is very true. I am glad Russia and China support Syria and its President Assad. Must keep power out of Muslims' many hands - always, everywhere. Heck, even Iran has a balance of power in their government and is somewhat of a democracy - it is "the most of" democracy you can get in that region (apart from Israel, different culture tho). Israel just cannot help Assad openly because that would fuel the muslim hatred towards Syria's government, but damn, I hope they do so un More..
