  • i cant believe that it is Not Possible:

    Even with fully stuck GAS:

    - To shut down the engine ignition
    - to fully apply on the brakes
    - hand brake too
    - go to neutral and let the engine cry to hell
    - or even go to first gear the car cries loud at 20 MpH

    i cant believe that

    • @kingcopy unfortunately, nowadays it's seems all these new cars have electronic throttle.. You only have to google electric throttle stuck to see how many people have the same type of problem. Maybe a surge or something making every damn thing electric go live and wild. I wouldnt attempt to handbrake it those speeds and chances are this was an automatic so no downshift or neutral. And needless to say, the brakes are electronic as well.... I think she did well to control the car and not roll it More..

    • @Wan-chop Thank you for your opinion, but what comes more in direction of reality if there is just a stupid woman on the steering wheel, i bet 10 Dollars that the ignition, gear and the brakes were ok.

Sorry but the brakes are stil old fanshioned hydraulic.
Yes there's ABS, ESP and so on, but nothing that will stop her from stopping the car using the brakes.

Look up the story and you'll find that she attempted to shift gears, but was unable to, brakes were ineffective, and her car has a push button ignition that wouldn't shot off the car. She was finally able t stop by pulling up on the accelerator while pressing on the brake with her other foot. Once she stopped she immediately got out and the car started to take off again on its own, until police jumped in and were able to shut it down. I'd have to guess that the officer was able to sh More..

    • @Aussie Ya I think next time I'm getting pulled over I'll just stomp the gass then an hour latter pull over and say my gas was stuck. Haha it might work

  • Put the car in neutral?

Some cars don't allow you, gearbox locked into drive range at high speeds to prevent people using the gear labelled 'R' for racing.

Yeah, I think since the late 80s, early 90s most automatics were made that way.

    • @N4CR just quoting a driving safety site:

Thanks to things like loose floor mats and a poorly placed racecar throttle cable, I have experienced stuck throttles. Although this will be a rare occurrence for most drivers, if your engine starts racing away uncontrollably, it must be stopped immediately.

      Take these actions:

If the engine started racing when you pushed the brake, release the brake. If the engine stops racing, you were actually pushing the gas by mistake.
Put the transmission in Ne More..

One thing that article doesn't mention is that running an engine on the limiter for prolonged periods can stretch and crack valves.
But they are the right actions to take, if the car will let you.

  • Gotta give credit to the cops, they did a good job here.

I had my linkage break and leave the carb about 3/4 open once. In a panic I tried to turn the ignition off and the keys fell on the freaking floor board locking the wheel.

It was a 4 speed so I put it in neutral and ran it off the road into an embankment.

  • This kinda happened to me once, when I accelerated a piece of the floor mat got over the gas pedal and held it pushed down. I pushed down the clutch and the engine revved as hell while I managed to pull back the mat. It was kinda stressful I must admit. :)

  • Hmmmm....gas pedal got stuck, she said the brakes didn't work and she couldn't shut off the car? Bullshit. She has a better chance of getting hit by lightning 50 times than everything failing at once like that. I suppose she couldn't throw it into neutral either. The worst part is they gave her credit for her driving!!!! She got lucky steering....her driving sucks! Knowing what to do in that situation is part of driving.

    • @ibelieveindog
In some autos when this happens they can't shift out of gear, brakes fade etc. Surely they can turn key off but seems they can't do that while moving in some cars either >_<

Too much safety and electronics fucks shit up. Happened to state troopers in a prius too..

    • @N4CR I'm pretty sure that in every car you can shift into neutral while moving. I believe it's a standard safety feature. I could be wrong.

    • @ibelieveindog the 2011 sorrento is pretty much all electronic. im not %100 sure about the brakes but for sure the throttle and ignition are run through the computer. so, a failure with the computer could prevent the ignition button from working to shut the car off (there is no physical key to turn, at all), it could also 'lock' the throttle wide open, and ive never tested it on my sorrento before i sold it but i imagine when throttle is under full load like it was for her i doubt the vehicle wi More..

    • @iLLNiSS The sorento may have fly by wire accelerator but it doesn't have brake-by-wire. Only Toyota and Mercedes have that on a couple of models. Besides, every car must have 2 separate brake systems (that's why there is a cable used for the parking/emergency brake). By the time she was at 120 mph she would probably experience brake fade but do you really think everything failed or she just didn't know what to do? What's more likely? I find it very hard to believe that the PCM could have such a More..

    • @ibelieveindog im sure panicing had a lot to do with this, but it doesn't rule out failure. if the ignition and accelerator share the same IO bus on the ECU there's a good possibility when one goes the other does too.

even at 10mph, the e-brake would be absolutely useless if the throttle was 'open'.

regardless, there would have been a way to get out of the situation if she knew more about vehicles but she likely didn't. she's lucky she can actually handle a vehicle a little bit because this More..

  • Pretty much all cars coming off the assembly line these days are equipped with an electronic throttle. It is no longer mechanical. Back in the day, the throttle was controlled by a cable and pulley system attached to your gas pedal. All of this applies to the brake pedal and steering as well.

Essentially, you are relying on sensors and a computer to decide how to adjust the throttle and brakes when you step on the pedal.

Not all of these incidents have been caused by "floor mats".

    • @Armed24-7 And with a 30lb spring on the throttle shaft, it has to be electronic, something fooling the ecu thinking it needs wot. What amazes me is no thought of neutral or turn the key off, just panic.
