The guys are local civilians and are there voluntarily and they are shouting slogans in support of Syria and Bashar while walking with the troops to show solidarity.

Human shields usually only work against western militaries which go out of their way to avoid killing innocents. I'm surprised it worked out for them here. The disregard for human life in the middle east is astonishing at times.
