Armed bandits in southeastern Iran have attacked a police station overnight and taken 16 police personnel hostage, a source says.
The bandits ambushed the police station in Saravan in the province of Sistan-Baluchestan, an informed source told the Fars news agency on Friday.
No group has yet claimed the responsibility for the hostage-taking but the action bears the hallmark of the terrorist group known as Jundallah, known to be recipient of CIA funding.
"We have received a request from the Iranian government to trace the militants and secure a safe return of their officials," a senior Pakistan government official who asked not to be identified told AFP.
"We have alerted the border security and asked them to send forces to the suspected areas along the Iranian border," he added.
