I've been doing protests and demonstrations off and on since about 1990. Unless the crowd is really raising hell and throwing stuff, the police usually know to hang back and let folks know they are there strictly to take care of traffic issues and emergencies. Having the riot squad and sniper teams out and visible like that is a heavy handed gesture either to intimidate the crowd (stupid) or to make the pantywaists happy (understandable, but still stupid).

You do a lot of Presidential appearances?
This was taken outside his appearance at Quincy Community Center yesterday (not mentioned in article I noticed). Isn't Presidential security normally pretty tight anywhere a President goes? What snipers are in view btw?

I've been to presidential appearances. I've seen local police in regular patrol uniforms. I've seen secret service in plainclothes. But I've never seen riot squads like that. Have you?

You got me. When the freaks come out to chuck bricks and riot for the assembled world leaders at the G8 and G20 meetings, riot police are used to deal with them.
Kind of highlights the president's attitude toward lawful Americans that he should treat them the same way.
He should continiue it. It will leave an indelible mark on the way people see him.
