BAGHDAD - The U.S. military believes a Shiite "special group" is responsible for the deadly car bombing on a commercial street in a Shiite neighborhood of Baghdad.
U.S. spokesman Lt. Col. Steve Stover said Wednesday that intelligence information corroborated by multiple sources indicates a special group led by Haydar Mehdi Khadum al-Fawadi is behind Tuesday's bombing in the Hurriyah district.
Stover says the aim was to incite Sunni-Shiite violence and prevent Sunnis displaced by sectarian cleansing from returning to the neighborhood. The U.S. believes Shiite special groups are backed by Iran.
Iraqi officials say more than 50 people died in the blast, but Stover says the U.S. can confirm 27 deaths.
