This is the moment a heroic lorry driver risked his own life to leap into his burning truck and steer it away from a busy high street.
Martin Ford ran to the HGV carrying £100,000 worth of furniture after smoke began rising from it.
He jumps into the cab and drives the lorry away from the narrow street in Maidstone, Kent.
And video footage shows the truck burst fully into flame as he is about to turn around a corner.
Minutes later the entire vehicle, including the cab, was engulfed by 20ft flames.
Fire crews were called to tackle the blaze, which started at 4pm on Wednesday afternoon, with stores full of Christmas shoppers.
Onlookers today hailed the quick-thinking, hero driver as truly “selfless”.
Ollie Millen, 20, who captured the blaze on film, said: “One minute the lorry was parked up on the street and the driver looked like he was unloading the furniture.
“Then suddenly there was loads of smoke and hot red flames, it just seemed to start all at once, I couldn’t understand how it happened.”
He added: “I thought he was really brave to move it, it could have exploded.
“The fire engines arrived four minutes after it was driven out of the street to safety.
“The driver got out and punched the wall, he looked angry at what had happened.
“The police arrived a little after and everyone was asked to stay back while the situation was sorted out.”
Sophie Griffin, who works at nearby Jessops store, said: “I smelled the smoke and thought it was our shop on fire. I came out and saw the lorry up in flames.”

@YuppieSouth I drove bus full yobs into the police station once. When got into the police station, I had all the police come and surround my bus. Punks all arrested, but I was told not to do it again. True story.

@Bangroad Blow me. I have moved a truck on fire and it was the cab not the cargo area. It's not heroic in the slightest.

@wanderlone Hero (ˈhi(ə)rō) n. pl. he·roes - A person who is admired for courage or noble qualities. It's not the fact that he drove a truck on fire that makes him a hero - we have all done stupid shit. It was the fact that he could also have just stood and laughed taking photos, but he didn't - he took action and potentially saved lives and property by endangering his own life selflessly. Stunt men and garden wrestlers aren't heros, this man is.

@Rafterman1 Nope. Try again.
Endangered his life? C'mon it wasn't a tanker full of fuel or explosives he moved. He drove it around the block, where it was still pretty close to shops and buildings.
Not being a thoughtless turd and doing something does not make you a hero.

@paperboy Yeah but putting his life at risk while doing the logical thing maybe hails him as a hero. He could have just left it.

@paperboy Everyone else left it, so no one really knows what the logical thing is. This guy is a hero for knowing what was.

@Sam1992 Everyone else was not that truck's driver, with years of experience and knowledge of what to do in those situations.
With your logic, the firefighters were also all heroes that day: no one else put out that fire.

@MeesterWolf Society changed and the term needed adjustment. Being selfless in itself is nearly heroic nowadays, let alone jump in a burning truck and drive it away from the stores that could have lost a lot in the shopping season if they had to close.

@kgbkgb1967 It did seem like he put it in the middle of a slightly wider road section. Even just moving it from the side to the middle would have been at least a good idea if not more.
