If they did have guns and were able to use them faster than the crooks (who were prepared with their weapons loaded and in their hands already), they still would suffer the same trauma of being broken into and threatened. Most likely the time it took them to unlock the gun case, load the weapon and try to find the safety and the crooks would have been forced to kill them defending their own worthless lives.
