Hundreds paid their respects Wednesday to a city cop who lost a battle with cancer after working at Ground Zero as the toll of dying first responders continues to mount.
Robert (Bobby) Ehmer, 47, succumbed to kidney cancer Sunday after struggling with the disease since 2007.
As friends and family filed past his coffin - which was flanked by photos and his beloved Harley-Davidson - they urged Congress to pass a stalled bill to provide medical help and compensation to sickened workers.
"We're here today once again to bury a police officer, the 30th to die from illness after Sept. 11," said PBA President Patrick Lynch outside the East Islip, L.I., funeral home where Ehmer's wake was held.
"As we are doing this, in Washington - 10 years later - they are still debating and discussing."
"We have now lost more police officers to 9/11-related illness than we did in the collapse that day," he added. "And we have 83 more police officers that we know are in hospitals."
The $7.4 billion James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act is currently hung up in the Senate after passing in the House in September.
Ehmer, of East Meadow, L.I., is the latest of nearly 1,000 first responders to die from illnesses blamed on their work at Ground Zero.
He worked as a cop at the 110th Precinct in Queens before retiring in 2005. He also worked as an emergency medical technician and a volunteer firefighter.
"These guys are getting sick, and some of them are dying," said Ehmer's sister, Annette. "It's not a partisan issue. It's something that needs to get done."

If you know your government doesn't take care of it's veterans or heroes, why would you want to risk your life and perhaps injure yourself in such away where you may require assistance... and not receive it.
Heroes will not second guess their decision to help someone in need; they might be part of a dying breed.

Health insurance for the military is part of the deal when the sign up...
I do believe that we as a nation are obligated for many reasons to care for our military veterans.
But heroic actions happen ALL the time. Not just in NYC after 911.
Nobody argues for the free health care for those injured helping a broke down motorist on a highway. Nobody argues for the free health care for concerned neighbors that run into a neighboring burning house to rescue friends or strangers.
I don't More..

blah blah blah, screw your Republican principles. Just give those heroes who were working at ground zero the help they need. I bet if you got a disease years later from breathing toxic fumes you would be lining up for help too and abandon your principles.

Their not putting the blame on the government for their illness. They are blaming them for not passing the bill and getting them medical help. These guys served our country that day and they should take the money they are spending on healthcare at Guantanamo Bay and give it to the responders.

MY GOD !!!!!!!!!
the Word 'ZADROGA' literally mean " TOO EXPENSIVE"
the spelling is correct and if you translate ZADROGA BILL into POLISH
you get "BILL IS TOO EXPENSIVE"
Do a Google translate yourself. Check it out.
I think it means something because NO ONE would just make up a word that fits the bill just like that.

Wonder what the circumstances were for a family to acquire a name like that in the first place.

Not surprised the government won't help these families.
Hell, if you remember right they couldn't even give those poor firefighters who went into the buildings decent radios ...
Damn shameful any way you look at it.

Makes perfect sense.
Selectively rewarding the actions of those who choose risky jobs as their profession, by handing out free heath care, is not the role of government.
Instead, I would suggest that privately funded charities or donations be raised for those that need it.
I would donate.

While it may look insensitive, I'm just not sure what the basis for their claim that the government now owes them free medical care is.
There are lots of hazardous jobs out there.
This sounds like a money grab to me.

A reward for helping the nation? The fact that they sacrificed their health selflessly for a country which would now refuse to take care of them for their work?
I know alot of Americans don't like paying for other people but these people are national heroes as I see it and if you're going to be wasting tax dollars, you might as well waste them on something meaningful like giving them the care they deserve. I class these first responders the same as soldiers wounded in battle, they deserve the be More..

The EPA came in and told them all it was safe to be at ground zero with no protection. Bush's administration new that was a lie but they needed it cleaned up asap and thought people lives in the process meant nothing to them.

I cannot speak to any of the facts you claim.
But if all that were true, then I would say the 9/11 rescuers would win a pretty easy lawsuit.
but since they have not, I wonder if all your facts are correct.
