Leaked surveillance footage of Iranian operatives appeared on
Turkish televisions on Monday night, sparking outrage in Turkey over covert
Iranian activities targeting its neighbor and putting further pressure on
already strained ties between Turkey and Iran amid a deepening rift over how to
respond to the unfolding Syrian conflict.

The video
footage was part of the evidence collected by an intelligence branch of the
Turkish police specializing in counterespionage, and is now part of the
nationwide investigation by the prosecutor's office of the eastern province of
Erzurum.

In one part of the footage, an unidentified Iranian agent is seen
talking to two female terrorists from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK),
collecting information on the organization's capabilities. The agent is
recorded asking a series of questions regarding what resources the PKK has
available to attack Turkish interests.

Other footage clearly shows a Turkish village guard, apparently on
the payroll of Iranian intelligence, giving out the coordinates of military
outposts, as well as a detailed itinerary of military assets available at
military bases of Turkey's eastern provinces.

The
unidentified Iranian agent, speaking in Turkish with Azeri dialect, asks the
guard, named Timur A., about the air power of a military garrison in the
province of Iğdır, at the border with Iran. The informant tells him that two
choppers are stationed at the garrison. The Iranian spy asks what kind of
military helicopters they are, and the informant responds that they are
Sikorsky and Cobra choppers.

In the rest of conversation, three Iranian agents ask the
informant to pick up a copy of the secret “defense playbook” for Turkish
garrisons. The informant initially says it would be very difficult to get his
hands on it, but, after being pressured by the agents, says he is able to
obtain it. At one point, he asks the Iranian agents to keep his identity
confidential.

“If you reveal my name to Turkey, I will be hanged. This is an
unforgivable crime in Turkey,” he says. In response, the Iranian agents promise
to keep his name secret, adding that Iran, being an Islamic republic, will
never betray him.

The video leak came after an Erzurum court on Friday ordered the
detention of seven suspects arrested in the investigation into an Iranian spy
ring found to be operating in Iğdır. The Iğdır Governor's Office announced in a
written statement last week that police had detained eight Turkish suspects in
simultaneous operations on charges of spying for Iranian intelligence. The
arrests stem from the expansion of a police investigation following the arrest
of two Iranian citizens and one Turkish citizen on Aug. 19, 2011, all of whom
were found to be in possession of digital recorders containing information on
state security.

The Turkish media reported that police had seized a Kalashnikov
rifle, a shotgun, video records and secret correspondence between the suspects
and Iranian intelligence officials. There were also records of phone
conversations they had had with PKK terrorists. It was claimed that the Iranian
spies had recorded the positions of public buildings, including police
departments, government offices and gendarmerie command centers, on GPS
devices. According to the seized evidence, police believe PKK terrorists used
intelligence provided by these spies via GPS devices when they launched an
attack on an Iğdır police station with rocket-propelled grenades in November
2011 and July 2012.

The suspects were detained under Article 327 of the Turkish Penal
Code (TCK), which criminalizes the acquisition of information regarding state
security by unauthorized individuals.

According to security sources, the group had plans to foment an
uprising among the Kurdish population in southern and southeastern Turkey,
especially in the provinces of Iğdır and Kars. The suspects face charges of
obtaining information about military personnel, the positions of troops in
eastern Turkey, official buildings and the Syrian opposition to share with
Iranian intelligence.

As the investigation into the alleged spies working for Iranian
intelligence is ongoing, police are now closely monitoring nearly 100 suspected
agents sent by Iran to gather intelligence in eastern and southeastern Turkey.

According to information obtained by Today's Zaman from police
sources, those agents, who present themselves as journalists or embassy staff,
are in regular contact and coordinate with senior PKK commanders in the region.
