Fury over rail price hike of 11% as cost of living soars

TRAIN fares will rocket by more than 11 per cent in January after a RISE in

inflation.

Shock figures today showed the cost of living went UP in July - tightening the

squeeze on families.

The Retail Prices Index (RPI) leapt from 2.8 per cent to 3.2 per cent on more

expensive air fares - and pricier high street goods.

July’s RPI reading is used to set the nationwide increase in train fares every

January.

The average fare will go up by RPI plus 3 - 6.2 per cent.

But tickets on high speed services in the south-east of England could soar by

as much as 11 per cent.

Furious union bosses said many annual season tickets would now cost more than

£5,000. This includes tickets from Bedford, Baldock and Manningtree to the

capital.

Transport union TSSA's general secretary Manuel Cortes said: “This is all

about squeezing a captive audience, the commuter, until the pips squeak.

“It’s little more than daylight robbery.”

The Consumer Price Index measures of inflation rose from 2.4 per cent to 2.6

per cent - against all predictions in the City.

Air fares in July leapt by 22 per cent - the biggest rise in the month for

EIGHT YEARS

  • wait to the cost of the 2012 Olympics are factored in and the UK be back into a deep recession...you got 150,000 new immigrants and migrates entering in 2012 to the UK in search for jobs and another wave of people heading to the welfare lines this year because of stale growth...mix in the fact the unions held your city for ransom because of the Olympics and your country is only a heart beat from where Spain is sitting these days.

    • @davele

nah we got resources, small population, stable banks, pretty young workforce, some what educated teens. Our dollar is strong,we getting billions of investment from
foreign countries since our economy is considered safe. The only thing that may cause a ripple is if our real estate crashes like the US.....

    • @gizmo8 Good jobs are scarce for the uneducated. Our economy thrives when the average guy has a good job. It's all temp work for shitty wages. Once the good wages are gone, everything follows. We import tons of people (just like Franch, Spain and Belgium) wanting the cheap labour, it ends up back firing eventually.

    • @Americanalltheway Fine to maek predictions from afar...but reality is cops aren't in much danger here

As for N.Ireland, its been quiet for years, however there the police (security forces) are very well armed any way for obvious reasons

    • @Americanalltheway I see that cop in Texas wasn't able to protect himself, was he? Got shot dead, didn't he? US - 9,000 gun deaths per year. UK - 39 gun deaths.
