Few years back was out driving with a drifting club(No I don't drift, was just with mates watching them) when a guy blew his gearbox and it severed an oil line and caused a fire and a dumbarse got out of another car with half a bottle of vodka and poured that on...

It won't do anything. The engine is sealed and as long as the intakes have filters, its fine. Theres no way for sand to get inside the engine. Keep in mind that when driving in the desert, you will pick up plenty of sand that'll get shot up into the engine bay.
The fire most likely came from a gasket having a hole and leaking oil that caught fire.

Well I'll answer it anyways. Yes it can hurt the belts but not really. Keep in mind belts are kept under high stress. Sure enough sand getting might cause it to slip or pop off the pulley but destroying the engine thats only the timing belt, oil pump, water pump other things depending on the year and type of car cause some have electrical parts that have taken over it now that don't use belts. The other belts are alternator, air conditioner which if pop off really just need to be More..
