A better view of the Navy's Rail Gun

Saw a previous video of a Railgun just thought I would load another more detailed one.

When the Navy is able to reduce the size/and power consumption of this thing , it is going to be a force to be reckoned with.

A test shot fires from the Office of Naval Research-funded Electromagnetic Railgun prototype launcher located at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division. The test shots begin a month-long series of full-energy tests to evaluate the technology. This prototype, developed by BAE, is the first of two industry-built launchers that will bring the Department of the Navy a step closer to producing a new-generation, long-range, weapon for surface ships.

  • very cool.
I just wonder what scenario this weapon will be brought to bear against.

is this just a cheaper ordinance delivery system?

I would imagine on a nuclear ship, given that this is an electrically driven gun, that one would have access to unlimited propellant. (and thus, never need any)

i get that it takes MASSIVE amounts of electricity...

but on a nuke, one might think that is handled...

      perhaps?

  • What would be the advantage over conventional guns, other than no gun powder?

    • @scourgeofsmallcords Probably more accurate due to the exact same amount of power to each shot. Just guessing...

Might be that the barrels won't overheat.

I remember reading somewhere that these have a incredible range potentially and that because of the speed of the projectile that it is far more powerful than a conventional war head!! And as someone else has already pointed out that the warheads/projectiles for the rail gun are a lot smaller and safer to store than conventional war heads. I.e if the ship is hit no chance of secondaries exploding= more damage to the ship.

    • @the welshman i believe the rail gun is supposed to allow stuff to be sent to low orbit, i'm not kidding :o

I made a comment of over heating: AFAIK, conventional barrels have to be replaced - in some cases after 20 shots etc. This system won't have that problem.

As for range: I think it will have problems as the air will create all sorts of inaccuracy issues. Might be wind free at launch but who knows what the wind is doing after a mile - ask any sailor!

The secondary explosions is a good point - lot's of ships gone down only due to internal explosions. So yeah, no more of them. Basi More..

    • @Kmanbay looked like an aluminum alloy of some type, and the fact a single, old guy was able to load it so easily, probably not more than 10 or 15lbs, its the velocity that does the damage.

      Posted Jul-3-2012 By

    • @8fl0z not just velocity, but the mix of the two. kinetic energy = weight * speed. So, if you can shoot something make of uranium in there, the damage would be ten fold :O

    • @8fl0z
I looked like aluminum to me too.

I just looked the probable speeds up. 2000 m/s which is almost 4700 miles an hour to 3500 m/s which is a little over 7800 mile per hour.

On the low end Mach 6.13 on the estimated high end mach 10.17 which is almost as fast as the space shuttle can go.

At an altitude 206 miles the space shuttle can orbit the earth every 90 minutes.

If my math is right the rail gun, using the mach 10 number, could fire and hit an object 500 miles away in about four More..

  • Wasting more $$$$$$$$ on the useless military defense weapons. The defense budget must be going through the roof.

Why does the US need to have the largest military, when we have even worse schooling and healthcare?

Our medical center is home to the best Hospitals in the World , which is why I saw people from all countries come here when I was going there……. Our schools are screwed up because of the Fucking Unions, throwing more money at it is not going to solve that problem…….. Military because every More..

    • @ccfc - I do not mind a debate , but I have a problem when some small mind piglet from another country thumbs down a discussion about a subject that pertains only to America.

Is it not amazing how many foreigners have their own little insignificant opinions about America, but those same people are just loving America Democracy.

Stay out of discussions in which you have you skin in the game, stick to things you know. Everyone can agree Opinions Vary.

You clearly have never been outside the US. True there are some very good hospitals in the US but a good healthcare is how normal people can access good healthcare. And there the US sucks. Even the poorest EU countries for example provide better health care for their population than a normal US citicen has.
