Teen 'accidentally' shot himself during web chat

The 2 basic rules of gun safety:

1. When first picking up a firearm, check to see if it's loaded.

2. Repeat step 1. before placing firearm in mouth and pulling trigger online.

Police have ruled that a US teen who shot himself while posing with a gun during a live video chat did not commit suicide.

Chat room members from Australia, the US, Canada and the Netherlands saw Nebraska man Trevor George, 19, pull out a revolver, hold it to his head and fire, 6News reports.

His last words were reported to be "help me", according to archived chats after the event.

Users witnessing the shooting initially doubted Mr George had actually shot himself, but were unable to contact emergency services because nobody knew his real name or whereabouts.

The next morning a user from Florida who knew Mr George's name called police, but it was too late to help the already dead teen.

Police have decided that Mr George did not intend to kill himself and was likely unaware the gun was loaded.

The young man had reportedly done something similar in a chat room before but the gun was not loaded.

Reviewing transcripts of the chat room conversation in March and speaking to every chat room member, police also ruled that he was not coerced into firing the gun.
