the building of the M1 motorway in the UK although technically speaking the first part of this new system was the
Preston By Pass opened in 1958. The M1 was, for all intents and purposes, the first 6 lanes plus 2 'hard shoulder lanes' for emergency use motorway complete with service stations - to typical 1960's Dave Brubeck style music.
