US Marines in Fallujah, Iraq: Operation Phantom Fury, November 2004

Phantom Fury lasted from November 7 - December 23, 2004. Shows Marines crossing the infamous "Brooklyn Bridge", where months earlier 4 US Blackwater contractors had been murdered in an unprovoked attack by a mob. Their burned bodies had been hung from the bridge in an incident that made world headlines, and that made it clear that Fallujah, a city of 350,000 people, had become an Al Quaeda terrorist stronghold.

Reinforced by foreign fighters led by the Al-Zarquawi (who had personally beheaded American Nicolas Berg in the shocking video viewed around the world) the city seemed about to lurch into becoming a terrorist city-state within Iraq.

After months at attempting an Iraqi solution and failing, US Marines and American and British Army units were forced to launch Operation Phantom Fury to clear the city of Al-Quaeda led terrorist enemy.

The civilians in the city were warned about the planned coalition attack for weeks ahead of time, by leaflets, radio broadcasts and loudspeakers and told to leave the city. Food, water and shelter was provided for them by American forces. As a result, after the start of the offensive, anyone remaining in the city or attempting to leave the city was regarded as a combatant.

Phantom Fury achieved its objectives and in resulted in 90 US Marines and soldiers KIA, and thousands of enemy insurgents had been wiped out.
