The forgotten war; The Taliban remains a force to be reckoned with, determined to re-establish its power base in Afghanistan
Part of channel(s): Afghanistan (current event)

In normal circumstances, the grim news that the death toll among US forces in Afghanistan had passed the 2,000 mark would have merited a solemn statement from Barack Obama, in his capacity as commander-in-chief. The Afghan conflict is, after all, supposed to be “Obama’s War” – a “war of necessity” against Islamist terrorists, as opposed to his predecessor’s war of choice in Iraq.

Yet with the presidential election race now entering its final stages, Mr Obama appears strangely reluctant to address the Afghan issue. Apart from brief references to his achievement in ending the war in Iraq, and his intention to do the same in Afghanistan, the conflict has almost been forgotten so far as the election campaign is concerned, with the Obama team determined to steer clear of an issue that no longer enjoys much popular support. The same goes for Mitt Romney, the Republican candidate. Despite his bellicose statements on national security issues such as Iran, he has been reticent about Afghanistan, beyond echoing the calls for a timely withdrawal: in his keynote speech to the Republican convention, he failed to mention the war, or to pay the customary tribute to America’s forces overseas.

With the future of the Afghan campaign hanging in the balance, this is an inopportune moment for America’s political classes to be suffering from a collective bout of amnesia. The Taliban remains a force to be reckoned with, as demonstrated by its recent spate of attacks against Nato troops, and is determined to re-establish its power base once American and British troops conclude their combat operations in 2014, and hand over full responsibility to local forces. If the West’s fragile gains do indeed unravel in such a fashion, neither Mr Obama nor Mr Romney will be able to ignore the implications.

Are you incapable of differentiating support for the troops from support for the war?
No, you don't have to support the war. A lot of people don't. Have at it! At least that is a respectful position and debate.
But to make a blanket statement that you don't support the troops who would lay their lives on the line for your ass??? Pretty skewed, IMO.

Anybody that hails a pedophile as a "prophet" deserves as much scorn, ridicule, and criticism as possible. No two ways about it, Muhammad fucked a nine-year old girl. And he pretty much took her as a bride by force, making Aisha submit to marrying him when she was six, before she knew much about anything.
To mentally stunted Muslims, this is acceptable behavior, even for a "prophet". Acceptable as a "custom of the time".
To the rest of the world, it ls More..

  • We were saying it before Bush went in, once we leave they'll just come back. It was a useless venture to begin with. Why did the opponents for the war get hammered on so damn much back then? We were right for fuck sakes. In the end all we needed was an informant and a special operations team, just like what was suggested before Bush committed us to this bull shit.

I think Al Qaida knew that too, they knew their history and what the Afhans would do, as they have always done, to invaders. Bait the US into a war in Afghanistan, beat feet, and leave the US spinning its tires in Afghanistan while Al Qaida goes and sets up shop in othere parts of the world.

The funny thing is, the dipshit extemist idealogues on either side of this conflict are too stupid to realize they both got played by AQ.

Unless you are talking about some other "mission" then you seem to forget that Osama did bite the bullet.

Obiviously there was other goals added later like building a real country there and keeping religious thugs at bay but doesn't have enough political support at the moment.

    • @theozwanderer its got nothing to do with being coward , its because of education. like 85% of Afghans arent educated.. so think about it..

True. And, because the cancer of Islam is involved, it only makes it all the worse.

    • @Afghanburger
yes it does, what's education got to do with fighting for your country? They seem educated enough to infiltrate the army and kill "colleagues". And then they turn up in Australia like a bunch of cowards while young Australian (and poms) are being killed defending their country. They are sly cowards.
