The SR-71 remains the world's fastest and highest-flying production aircraft, capable of Mach 3+ at altitudes of over 85,000 feet. In flight the titanium skin is heated to 500°C and expands by 15cm. The fuselage has longtitudinal creases to absorb this heat expansion but unsealed tanks leak fuel while on the ground. The Pratt & Whitney J-58 enigines start flight as turbojets, then become ramjets More..

I looked it up in Jane's:
Mig-25: 20.7 km
Mig-31: 20.6 km
SR-71: 25.9 km
Not even close.

Yeah, I think he's thinking fighters. That could be true.

Too bad the engines in the Russian planes would eat themselves when trying to match the performance of the Blackbird. The only thing the Mig 25 was ever really good for was inspiring the development of the F-15. Thank you USSR for over-inflating the fighter capability of the Foxbat.

Sounds like we exported to the right place, during the time and age of the cold war era; we would have needed people like him when we still had an army and air force worth the name. Currently however it would have been a waste of his work, had it been us that sat on his legacy.
