First aired between 1951 and 1959. Jack Webb got the series rolling again from 1967 to 1970. He was actually working to bring it back yet again but his passing away put the kibosh on the project. From 1951 to 59 there were 267 episodes. The 1967 to 70 Dragnet series had 98 episodes. I included the opening and closing to both here. The 1967 series is first for reasons I won't get into. So if you like the old series better then just hang in there or just fast forward to the Marlboro commercial.

There was a theatrical Dragnet movie in 1954. A made for TV movie aired in 1969. We're not going to discuss the 1987 movie with Dan Aykroyd.

Dragnet was one of those shows that made the transition from the heyday of radio to TV. I have my Sirius XM radio record it, it's a damn cool show if you get the opportunity to hear it.

  • Damn! I have watched Dragnet many times and MASH a gazillion times and the Harry Morgan connection never clicked! (no comments on intelligence here please..) Guess he got promoted from inspector to Colonel.

As always, thanks for the retro post. BTW, I really like the way you have the clips DVE'd into that old tv screen.

      Thanks for saying, much appreciated!

This not just to you but anyone reading who may be interested.

There are a few reasons for the TV presentation method. One, establishing the motif and feel of the series. The TV with sound effects and the way in which the retro material is presented as if you're switching channels allows for a logical tie together for a short montage of material from a respective period.

Two, being that most retro source material is 4:3 aspect ratio, but More..

    • @Rikki_Tikki_Tavi Thanks for the info. I was in the editing business for a while. Although what you did MAY look simple, getting it all together, thinking it through in consideration of differing aspect ratios, position of external watermarks. Not as hard as designing the space shuttle, but a really nice piece of work for one guy.
