  • Looks yummy (and nicely packed!).
What is it made from ?

    • @SomeTosser White Lotus seed paste and salted duck eggs are the most common fillings, though you can also get them with Red Bean paste and other ingredients. The thin crust is usually made from lard and flour.

  • They sure know how to make things look desirable. I am pretty sure it doesn't taste as good (to the western taste at least). And I've been to china to know what their food tastes like... even their candies are something to avoid.

  • One of those single moon cakes turned up here but I don't trust it D:

After seeing this though it is far more tempting to try. What do they taste like?

    • @N4CR Many different fillings. Mainly deals with their region. Some fruit, some fruit and nuts, beans, Lotus Seeds. They are delicious and rich. They are also expensive for high quality such as in the video. That 4 square one in the tin would be around 50 US dollars.

That does sound quite tasty, thank you. I'm going to go find and try it, after I finish digging a trench.

    • @N4CR They taste terrible, trust me on this, 19 years in Hong Kong and a Chinese wife...even the Chinese hate them.

  • I would eat that, looks like it would go real good with this cup of coffee I'm drinking right now

    • @Blklight Ive had them. There are I think 4 or 5 different fillings you can get. I like the 5 Kernel filling. They are very good, but rich.

    • @tat2d

Sounds perfect. What is a five kernel filling? Is that like corn or something?

      Posted Oct-2-2012 By

    • @Blklight Oh man, if you like nuts and seeds, you would go nuts for it. The ones I can get have usually walnut, watermelon seeds, pumpkin, almonds, peanuts or a combination of 5. Then mixed in some kind of syrup. Some even have a melon fruit and or a smokey ham and cant remember the name of it. The cake is dense as hell. Bad thing is, is can get a little pricey here in the US for High quality. But thats ok. You dont do it everyday, so splurge, I say!

Oh shit I forgot, some are made with 2 duck More..

    • @tat2d

Wow yeah duck eggs are definitely rich. I'm not a big fan of nuts, I have an allergy to most tree nuts, but if I could get one without that in there I would certainly try. Is this a seasonal thing or can you purchase them all year long? We have some pretty good asian markets around here so if they are all year I bet I could go buy some of these

    • @Blklight With the Holiday just a couple days ago, I bet any might have some left over. Our market we always use are friends and they only carry them from maybe Sept to end of October. We have a large Chinese population here where I live and they try to stock all these traditional items. You can get them from some shops that are cheaper in price, but also not quite a good, but still good for coffee or a special occasion.

  • Just bought some because I have to try them now. eBay seems to be the only place to get them as they are seasonal and everyone else is sold out:

Hmmm wonder if I can buy them here in Ottawa ont. probably have o go ino china town in Ottawa. I wouldn't mind giving them a try.

    • @AceCombat Well, I was a little curious on that myself. Amazon has some for sale. I dont know the bakeries listed, and might require a few minutes of research to see who is the best that is available on there. A couple things I saw a couple years ago. That the Chinese bakeries wee not listing ingredients as required. I think if I was in your case, I would try to get a US or Canadian Supplier, because of the shipping time from China would either maybe hurt the cake, or be costly.

    • @tat2d or it may have some ingredients that we don't consider food over here in North America. I know I won't like melamine in my cake loo

  • Crust: lard or vegetable oil
Filling: red bean or lotus seed paste

I kinda respect that throughout history Chinese and other civilizations survived eating from what they could find and make.
But that must taste like shit.

    • @dudenukem Nah, not really. The Chinese equivalent of fruitcake. Very thick and heavy. They're the sort of thing you have to grow up with, otherwise they taste anywhere from blah to nasty. Looks like this guy's English students gave him a bunch of cheap mooncakes. I've had the best mooncakes from 5-star hotels and fancy restaurants and they're still not very good.

    • @Texan_in_China agreed. I had a supplier send me some and I fed it to the neighbor's dog after tasting it.

    • @Serious Sam You are right, but most of Chinese likes called mooncake, the Chinese word is“月饼”,“月”means moon,“饼”means cake,it is translated from Chinese word

  • Very Cool. China has their Moon "cake".
In Tennessee, the traditional Moon Pie.

    http://moonpie.com/single

Ha ha ha! I don't eat them, but they are a tradition here and they sell them by the zillions. I'd rather have a Moon Cake with the 5 kernel filling, or the jujube.

    • @thevoice213 Oh Man, in the south, they are like some kind of Food God. I live very very close to the McKee family. Who owns Little Debbie Foods and stuff. Those people are Gozillianaires. Their servant quarters are probably a million dollar structure. At least twice the size of my 4200 sq, ft. home. Their house is phenomenal.
I dont know how it is done, but even their multi boat dock is brick. All of our docks float. They have to.
