Senate OKs promotion of Iraq commander

updated 11:46 a.m. PT, Thurs., July. 10, 2008
WASHINGTON - The Senate has confirmed Gen. David Petraeus as the top commander in the Middle East and Lt. Gen. Raymond Odierno to replace Petraeus as the chief military officer in Iraq.

The Senate voted 95-2 in favor of Petraeus and 96-1 for Odierno.

Last year, Petraeus helped to tame growing opposition to the Iraq war in Congress by providing measured assessments of progress and warning that an exodus of U.S. troops would result in chaos. In the meantime, he advocated a buildup of some 30,000 troops in Baghdad and other hot spots, which eventually proved vital in tamping down violence.

Odierno, who implemented much of the strategy as Petraeus' deputy in Iraq, is slated to receive a fourth star and will report to Petraeus in his new job.

  • Petraeus was mostly a desk pushing general with good educational credentials. He is one of the most political generals in modern history writing editorials in favor of the Iraq War weeks before the 2004 elections and relentlessly supporting the president in his testimony . His idea of buying off the Sunnis may have been a tactical stroke of genius and moreso than the surge, made Iraq into a strategic failure instead of an apocalyptic disaster. The war has failure built into it but the death rate More..

  • Great man will go down in military history books if things continue like they are. The troops love him as he has helped them tremendously.

Beat an insurgency by getting contacts inside the insurgency. Hence hitting fourty targets from the air in a 10 min time span. Hope they shift him to afganastan. We need him there Asap.

And to think the far left tried to kill his career before he even had a chance to get settled in and do his job. We almost had another vietnam cause of the far left. Wh More..

  • The big difference between Petraeus and what the Bush admin was doing is that Petraeus actually talked to the enemy in the area. Bush, and his idiot republiturds just wanted to keep shooting and screaming, "we're trying to give you freedom". But Petraeus did something different, he talked to the "enemy" and of course was instrumental in offering the "enemy" money to stop the fighting. Who knows what will happen over there when the U.S. leaves, but Petraeus did do More..

    • I do understand that the truth can hurt.

Why is it that the Iraq government is asking when the US are going to pull out and GWB says that that isn't an option.

  • LOL

The sunni geurillas fought a 2 front war, on occupiers and on majority.
Then yankees said ok we dont fight, fight the majority instead, and you get payed just like under Saddam...lol.
Saddams 300000 troops have swelled to almost 600000, and yankees at 170-180000..lol
Where is the geniuos of this man? If the genious is to kill civilians, put the population in ghetos and ripp a nation in part by creating and feuling ethnic turmoil..then hes a great general.

    Peace.
