Bus plows into cars on the tollway

The Dallas Area Rapid Transit bus driver who who crashed into several cars on the Dallas North Tollway last month was fired Monday. Veolia Transportation, DART's paratransit operator, on fired the bus driver, who had a good safety record and more than 11 years of experience. "There is no evidence at this time of any violation of Veolia cellphone policies or drug or alcohol use," said Ken Westbrook, Veolia Transportation president. "Safety must always be our highest priority," Westbrook said. DART released video that shows the paratransit bus driver was not using a cellphone. The video shows that the driver was looking straight ahead at the time of the wreck. The bus smashed into four cars in the southbound lanes of the toll road near Harry Hines Boulevard on June 29. Two people were injured, including Jose Sepulveda, a husband and father of two. Firefighters had to cut Sepulveda from his black Nissan Altima. Sepulveda's father, Victor, said his son doesn't remember the crash. He is still in Parkland Hospital with a fractured skull, a shattered hip and 11 broken ribs. Sepulveda's father said he didn't understand why the bus driver was fired, especially after seeing the DART video. The bus driver appears to be paying attention when he plowed into the line of cars waiting to exit onto Interstate 35. But in video the North Texas Tollway Authority released last week, it's clear the driver never even tapped the brakes before the crash. According to the accident report, the DART investigator said the driver caused the chain-reaction crash by not slowing down.

  • I think he may have been stuck on "auto-pilot". When you drive a certain route everyday for years, you are so used to it, you know where the signs are and which exits to take. He may have been in that zombified state where he was looking at the cars but not "seeing" anything around him. This also happens when certain people's minds wander while driving when they "daydream" as they drive, and then wonder how the fuck they got where they were going.

So he made a mistake, didn't do anything realy wrong besides wandering off with his mind. Did you notice that there was a line of dark cars exactly on the point where the light tarmac changed to the dark tarmac? As if they were in camouflage! When he has a good safety record and 11 years with this company they shouldn't fire him.

I did notice that and I thought the same thing, they blended in with the on ramp until he was right up on them

  • And every inner city waste for three blocks grabbed their necks and are filling lawsuits. I remember in DC or Baltimore I think a bus wrecked and over a dozen people filed lawsuits. It was not until they went to court to get "paid"and were arrested for fraud instead that they found out the bus was out of service at the time and the accident happened when it was being towed.

Imagine if, one day, he WASN'T paying attention! Fire his ass now!
