Austrian skiier Matthias Lanzinger will have his left foot amputated after developing serious vascular problems according to a statement released by the Austrian Ski Federation (OSV) on Monday.
The 27-year-old - who has placed just once on the podium in 37 races - was concussed and broke his leg in a fall in the World Cup super-G race in Kvitfjell, Norway, on Sunday and was taken to hospital in Oslo.
"He is suffering from an exceptionally serious vascular illness," announced Professor Thomas Holzenbein, an eminent angiologist from Salzburg, who was despatched to Oslo to examine the skiier.
"Releasing blood supply is critical. We are going to try and improve his status with a new operation but there is no way of predicting the outcome."
the medic said Sunday.
The outcome of the operation wasn't a success.
He has been put into an artificial coma since the first operation because of the seriousness of his situation.

Doesn't surprise me a bit after watching that horrible fall.

How Unfortunate for this brave young man. I hope he recovers quickly and with as little discomfort as possible.

UPDATE:
it seems he will lose the leg right under the knee.
A controversy is still open since no helicopters were available for emergengy purposes in Lilehammer, the rescue has been completed with a private copter.
The operation lasted for 9 hours, the crew had to take a piece artery from the right leg to repair vascularization in the left, but they had no success.

It may be a silly question ivanover, but does this finish his career?, any examples of anyone carrying on after such a bad accident?, poor guy.
