Class-1 Powerboat accident

Last weekend in Libreville, Gabon, William Nocker was killed in a tragic and brutal 360 flip during the 2nd round of the Class-1 World Championship, the African Grand Prix. The race was cancelled, and the other teams led a memorial out to the spot where he died.
His co-pilot, Kurt Åge Olsen, is still in an induced coma, but off the critical list.

In the video, Kurt is in the red race suit, and William, who died, is in the white racing overalls with #90 on his arm.

These boats are 42 feet long, 14 feet wide, 5.5 tons, and can hit speeds of 180mph.
At the time of the accident, they where doing about 120mph.

  • Awesome watercraft, I personally start getting unnerved after about 50 knots on a smooth as glass day.

On a side note I received an infraction for an unknown comment this afternoon, I want to thank the moderators for not allowing me to know which comment that I made that offended someone so badly that I had to be reported.

  • Tragic, Was it the impact or did they have trouble getting them out of the water?

    • @jfm8561

      Impact.
The boat landed the right way up, but hitting a wave full on like that is like hitting a concrete block. We see what crash tests do to cars at 40mph.... well this was at 120mph.
Very very rarely does a cockpit take the primary impact, but when it does, its brutal.

    • @GrumpyAuldBastard The Hans device has saved many an auto racers neck, maybe these racers will look into the forensics of the incident and come to a similar conclusion.

    • @whatduh

We have been looking at it for many years, but the risk of not being able to get out of a sinking boat is the problem.... however, there are developments happening to adjust and adapt a Hans system for Powerboats.
