Roger Ebert: Eastwood speech was 'sad' :-(

.

Film critic Roger Ebert gave actor Clint Eastwood’s speech at the Republican National Convention on Thursday two thumbs down.

“Clint, my hero, is coming across as sad and pathetic,” Ebert tweeted during Eastwood’s remarks. “He didn't need to do this to himself. It's unworthy of him.”

  • What Eastwood did tonight was funnier, fresher, edgier, and braver than anything those comedy cowards Chris Rock, Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert have done in 15 years.

82 years-old, and Dirty Harry is still pissing all the right people off.

    My hero.

    • @yorba well and that's really the saddest part, those who the right revere as their heroes and elect as their representatives. it's like they have an endless well of has beens and halfwits who are willing to do and say anything for attention. yeah, it is sad and pathetic for sure, and no it's not near the professionalism and polished wit of a stewart or colbert, don't fool yourself any more than you have already.

    • @EventHorizon2012 lol. he had an aggressive cancer that took most of his throat and lower face. The photo is his permanent look.

  • Wrong headline.

"Aging queer gives an opinion no one cares about"

    That's more accurate.

  • I just had to go watch Clint's speech on YouTube.... the one uploaded to LL had been removed by the uploader, AngryBanshee.

While I love Clint and agreed with a lot of what he said in general, it was a bit uncomfortable to watch in some places.... I just don't think that Republicans understand why. Although Paul Ryan looked a little distant, like he was considering the implications.

There is just something sad about trotting out an 82 year old legend and having him carry on a ten minute conv More..

    • @EventHorizon2012

The real tragedy here is that Eastwood is pro-gay marriage, pro-choice and pro-environment, somebody didn't do their home work lol

    • @God_Himself Is he pro for all these thing, or does he just not give a fuck either way?

      Posted Aug-31-2012 By

    • @God_Himself He is not pro-gay nor pro choice, he "just doesn't give a fuck"
I, too, don't give a rats anus if Ellen Degenaretes wants to marry another woman, then abort the baby she was carrying. I personally find both actions repulsive; but then I feel the same way about ketchup on a Chicago hot-dog. (lets see who here finds the last sentence noteworthy).

    • @cougar58

That's just one of his famous quotes but ask anybody in Carmel and they would tell you that Eastwood is a fiscal conservative who takes left-leaning stands on social issues such as gay marriage and environmental protections.

      BTW, I make my own tomato sauce, I can't stand ketchup and I don't eat hot-dog ;-)

  • It's unworthy to admit, "Politicians are our employees" "If somebody's not doing the job , then you gotta let him go"?
I suppose if instead, he gushed all over Obama and heaped praises upon him at the DNC he'd be a hero. And Oprah would have tears streaming from her eyes and everyone in the audience would be in rapt attention.

    • @migs1955 No, I agree with the statements, and if he'd come across like that for the DNC Republicans would totally set his ass on fire and I, for one, as a liberal, would be embarrassed for the shameless pandering.

    • @Saros You know as well as I they'd be starstruck. They always are. You have Oprah strutting out and everyone is having an orgasm. That isn't pandering? Are Will.i.am , Streisand, Springsteen et al all pandering too?
No, it boils down to the fact that he supports the "other side". He's a traitor. Sort of like when Zell Miller spoke such heresy a few conventions ago at an RNC.

    • @migs1955 No.
It's the fact that he is old and rambling and close to incoherent.
      It was embarrassing.
I love Clint and don't give two shits who he supports but his appearance there was just sad, and not for the reasons you seem to think.

    • @Tongueboy Sure, I admit it wasn't a polished teleprompter driven cliche riddled speech. It reminded me more of just an extemporaneous little talk with just a couple of points and a few comedic tidbits. The essence was, "We own this country, politicians are OUR employees and if somebody's not doing the job, you have to let them go." I'm a Democrat and I don't have a problem with that. I would have applied that to Carter both Bushs' and now Pres. Obama.

    • @USMCSniper

You're right, he probably should because he is pro-gay marriage, pro-choice and pro-environment but nobody told the convention organizers I guess lol

Mind you I remember the time when Mitt Romney was pro-choice, pro-environment and pro-gay-rights but that can still come back, who knows?
      lol

  • LMAO. Anytime that clown gave a movie two thumbs up I knew it was going to be a major snorefest. If Him & his butt buddy Siskel gave it 2 thumbs down, it was usually a great action filled movie definitely worth watching more than once.

I'll definitely take the same approach to this issue :@)
