MEDINA COUNTY -- Two-year-old Justina McCormick died and her three-year-old sister Mary McCormick is in critical condition at MetroHealth Medical Center after the little girls closed themselves in a neighbor's car in the afternoon heat Thursday.
It happened next door to their home on Columbia Road.
Their parents were both at work.
"It's my understanding they were being watched by an older sibling and a friend," said Medina County Chief Deputy Kenneth Baca. "The grandfather was at home, too."
When those responsible for the little girls noticed they had not seen them for about 40 minutes, they called for help.
Deputies and neighbors began a search. A neighbor found them in her car, parked in her driveway. The car doors were closed.
Emergency personnel administered CPR and other life-saving procedures at the scene.
"In this hot, humid, weather, the interior of a vehicle heats up right away," Chief Deputy Baca said.
