That looks more like a .308 Win, .300 Magnum, but not like a .50 BMG cal!
The cannon is too thin and has no muzzle brake or blast deflector!

You can put way too much powder in a decent quality muzzle loader and it would never do all that. He may have used smokeless or had two bullets packed in there, the previous shot misfired so he put in more powder and another bullet. Which can happen if he does not know what he is doing.
Kinda way thin barrel for a .50 cal. Mine has a much thicker barrel.

Muzzle loader with a scope?
Yeah, cutting rails (if that is how it was mounted) in the barrel to take the mounts ain't gonna weaken it by much is it?
2nd scenario - there was already a load in there & he stuck another one on top of it.
3rd scenario - too many grains ;@) BOOM!
Either way - it was an expensive & painful lesson.
