It's still an ambush just not a very successful one.

The problem in your idea is one life of our soldier worth one dead VC you/we lost a war on this idea.

@right2carry False. It was very successful. They killed 250 American Soldiers in a week. The highest since the Korean war.

@Atrey
I didn't lose anything, I wasn't born until the end of the war. In fact if it weren't for the war I would have never been born. My father was in the service as military intelligence based in Japan to attempt to get Japanese to spy on the VC (which he never did because he was too busy partying), where he meant my mother.

My grandfather took part in this as a heli-bound artillery FO with the air cav. He would always tell tidbits of stories about his other actions and other tours, but refused and never did speak of this battle in particular. When asked about going to see the movie "We Were Soldiers" his only reply would be, "Why watch it for a second time?"

@Dat1111 - and, wow, the irony... as the u.s. now provides aid to that same communist regime run country that cost too many american lives... kind of shameful, imo...

@Dat1111 An alternative view - Braver Vietnamese fighting to run their own country, their own way for their own people free from US interference and aggression.

@chpowernow Nope, not ill-fated strategy. America did NOT know how to do battle in Vietnamese terrain at that time. Lost is lost, don't sugar-coat it.

6:40 - The famous quote from Major Charlie Beckwith about the fighting ability of the Viet Cong - "They're the finest soldiers I've ever seen" - you would never hear a soldier today saying that about the Taliban on the evening news.

@sakb Because american troops aren't "fighting", only patrolling here and there, shoot when they see weird foreigners, aim from afar, on a plane somewhere, press buttons, use drones here and there. Fighting a war? Naaah.

I really feel bad for the poor guys that got sent to vietnam.
young guys getting drafted over there and dying....it was the worst we had ever seen.
troops are willing to sign up these day....they want to go to the middle east to fight a pointless war.
seeing young guys getting blown up by IEDs is messed up.
war is hell and we never learn.

@BeerBasher The numbers are different though.......the reason no draft is needed for Afghanistan is because there are enough troops in the standing armies. Compared to the days of Vietnam, and the nature of Vietnam, less boots are needed on the ground.
But yep, we never learn. I was going to say Afghanistan is the 21st century Vietnam, but really, it's just the 21st century Afghanistan......

@mickeybee It's another Vietnam. Another massively lopsided destruction of the enemy. The lesson to learn is to not bother attempting nation building with people who aren't capable or willing to live in the 21st century.

its kinda the same.
differant place with differant tactis, thats all.
nam was choppers and now its humvees.
waiting for the ememy to come to them and not going out into the mountains to find the enemy...it was the same with the jungle.
as soon as we pack up and leave, it will go back to the way it was....just like nam.
