April 16th 2012
ATLANTA - Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal has signed legislation that would require thousands of people applying for welfare to pass a drug test before they could receive benefits.
The Republican-controlled Legislature passed the law over the opposition of Democrats.
Backers say it will ensure that welfare benefits are used for their intended purpose and not to subsidize drug use and criminal activity. Democrats said the measure places an unfair burden on the poor.
Gerry Weber of the Southern Poverty Law Center said the organization is prepared to file a lawsuit over the issue, but not until it is put into practice. It takes effect July 1.
A similar law in Florida took effect last July but was blocked by a federal judge in October.
At least two dozen states have proposed measures this year that would require drug tests for benefits.

What does a drug test have to do with someone's need for welfare?

@Blklight Maybe it could incentivize them to clean up and you would think a not being a drug addict would lead to better opportunities to get out from under welfare. I'll have to read the bill..

@Blklight A drug test will not effect someone who's not a drug addict. The people who are honestly trying to feed their kids and put a roof over their heads deserve assistance. The people who abuse the system are the ones who need to be stoped.

@Blklight If people have money for drugs , they should have money for food and other expenses. If the money from the welfare is used for drugs, that's not what the money is given for. By doing drugs , they will never try to find a job , or get an education to get a job and nobody would employee them anyway because they do drugs. not too complicated to figure that out really.

You know they actually wanted to do this but some of those people in the higher up positions flat out refused it. Nonethelss, welfare recipients still NEED to be tested. I witnessed the abuse of the system first hand on numerous occasions. On welfare getting high and selling drugs.

This calls for one of my favorite quotes.
"The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not."

@Kafirindareelharb A middle class guy who busts his ass to support himself and his family pays 30% taxes while someone who makes millions of dollars in return on what is essentially the labor of others without lifting a finger only has to pay 15% taxes (and complains about high taxes). In this scenario, who is the one willing to work and who is the one not willing to work?

Are you failing to identify the various types of income while making this claim?? I hope not. It seems as if you did though... Are you talking about passive, earned, capital gains or dividends????
Also, take a look at what that guy/woman did, the sacrifices that he made to get to where he is. Would you do the same? And please don't give me the old excuse that More..

Let me tell you a true story . I am a HVAC contractor and have had state contracts doing low income housing , while changing out the heaters in many houses I have overheard many conversations amongst the welfare class about how to manipulate the system and where to get help for food , food stamps and other minority government programs . It was hard for me to listen to them without speaking out , what I noticed was they actually treated this like a job , they conducted meetings to More..

EXACTLY!!!!!!! There was a lady that had her house built for her (HUD) and she paid little to no money at all. She had 3 kids as well. Roughly 4 months later her house (that was paid for by taxpayers) was raided and they found something like 40+ bricks of heroin inside.

"Democrats said the measure places an unfair burden on the poor."
Fucking really?! I mean really???! They are placing an unfair burden on my damn paycheck. We have to take a piss test for employment so why not for welfare. They also claimed that this is against the Constitution. Give me a fucking break.
AP, you are from Pittsburgh. You know all to well about the city that I grew up in here. Riddled with crime and welfare warriors.

I don't have a problem with this as many recipients are on welfare because they spend any money they do have on drugs. It's about time.
