  • It's Red October - didn't you guys watch the movie?

  • I bet it is NOT a Nazi U-Boat.
People should be aware that the picture is actually soundwaves (SONAR) turned into a photograph / on screen picture by complicated techology: what you SEE is what this machinery HEARD. If you then superimpose a picture / schematics of a German sub... and people tell you it looks similar...

Well, the structure at the bottom of the Baltic sea LOOKED like the superimposed Millenium Falcon, didn't it?

    • @Uac_mitun_ahau How much time have you actually spent working with Side Scan Sonar??

From your comment I would say you don't know jack shit about Side Scan and the technology in these systems.

    • @Uac_mitun_ahau If you doubt the validity of the technology , do yourself a favor and go on over to the Tube and do a search for Edgetech Side Scan sonar.

There is a vid there done by a close friend of mine and there are some very nice images that will show you just what this technology can do.

Pay particular attention to the image that shows the body of a drowning victim from Rhode Island. This image is so good that you can even tell how the body is positioned on the bottom.

    • @Uac_mitun_ahau It does seem rather buried to be a LARGE object like a sub...

    • @aussite I do not doubt that technology works. I advise caution in the interpretation of the results.
But if you like to trust technology that much... who am I to tell you not to?

    • @aussite I guess you would agree that it still takes experience to interprete the pictures. And what this picture shows... needs interpretation. Superimposing the shemes of a sub and claiming "This is it!"... it's misleading, I think.
Just like Tarkin said to Vader. "Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed."

  • I wouldn't expect any u-boat captain during wartime would put his ship into such risk as to navigate up a river in enemy territory. It completely negates the advantage subs have in open ocean, hit hard and disappear. I don't know what, if anything is down there but I doubt it's a German u-boat. It will definitely be interesting to learn more when they go back with ROV's.

    • @weada ...they are suggesting they were deserting.

    • @weada There was just another U-boat found about 70 miles south of Nantucket Island.

If you look into it in any depth you'll soon see that the Germans did many many things with their U-boats that would be considered rather unorthodox.

I would also be willing to bet that you're only seeing a screen capture from one run over the target and I would also bet that they did more than one run on this target. So they probably have a lot more info than they are putting out here.

  • Excuse me?
    "If the German government agrees...."?!?!

Wait a minute, WHERE is this thing located?
    In WHICH country?
And you need or want to ask WHO??

Wait, I've got an idea, why don't you ask the UN?

    • @Bogenschutze
Hey.. its still our boat (if its really a boat, this sonar pictures are not that convincing). We just misplaced it by accident

    • @Bogenschutze

It's property of Germany still, doesn't matter where it "landed".

    • @valhalla-riot Your boat, doesn't mean we can't go look at it without your permission.. just means you get it(if we don't claim salvage rights) and the bodies(if any) on board.

    • @mphatik Actually since it was a ship lost during a war.. the only property under International law is the bodies of the crew.. it's called Salvage.

    • @Aariss
I think it is just a gesture to the german goverment.. But in principle it is not necessary ta ask for permission to check out a unknown object lying in your rivers

  • They may have travelled up that river looking for a town without realizing how remote it is. If they abandoned the boat and tried to walk out - they may not have survived. It would be interesting to find one of the crew still alive somewhere.
