AN admitted Satanist convicted of brutally killing a romantic rival and then butchering him has been sentenced to life in a Florida prison.

Lazaro Galindo, who represented himself, told the Miami court he was God and that he would unite the Catholic and Satanic religions.

He also maintained his innocence, saying he felt "the actual killer is still loose on the street".

A jury deliberated for just over two hours last month before convicting Galindo of second degree murder.

Calling the murder "appalling" and "gruesome", Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Peter Adrien ordered Galindo serve a life sentence, virtually guaranteeing he will die in prison.

In a confession nearly 40 pages long, the 26-year-old detailed how he stabbed and beat Argelio Gonzalez and then spent two days inside his caravan home dismembering the man. Police found an altar and a cauldron filled with knives and metal weapons.

Galindo had initially petitioned the court to wear his Satanic garb to trial, but said he had found God the day it was scheduled to begin.

Galindo is serving a 45 year sentence for molesting a 13-year-old. His life term will start after that sentence concludes
