No charges for Houston twins who lived with mom's corpse

Two adult twins accused of living for three months with their mother's decomposing corpse in the living room of their Houston home will not face charges in the death.
A Harris County grand jury that heard evidence in the case refused to indict Edward and Edwin Berndt, 48, in the death of their mother, 88-year-old Sybil Berndt, which means the murder charges against the pair will be dismissed, the Harris County District Attorney's office confirmed Tuesday.
The men told police they were watching football in their southeast Houston home Jan. 10 when their elderly mother fell.
The brothers said they did not have money for medical treatment. They left their mother on the floor, where she died three days later.
Three months later, police were called to check on the previously active octogenarian and found a home filled with flies and the two brothers, who had not been seen by neighbors in months.
Their attorney, Robert Scardino, said when the pair was arrested that there were possible issues of competency and both were appointed guardians.
Donna Hawkins, a spokeswoman for the district attorney's office, said the grand jury no-billed the cases, effectively ending the prosecution.
