My reaction was much the same. Industrial processes are a mystery for many people. I love learning about them and the old school ways to do things.
I wonder if they could crudely do this back in the early ages.

And the coolest part about friction welding is that it doesnt melt the material but forges the different parts together. Velocity and pressure is all it needs and the kinetic energy is dissipated as heat to finish the process.
