Doe found bleeding in backseat of Palestinian vehicle near Beit El undergoes surgery at Jerusalem Biblical Zoo; expected to make full recovery

IDF soldiers saved the life of a two-week old doe that was found bleeding in a car driven by a Palestinian near the Beit El settlement in the West Bank.


After being treated by a military paramedic, the deer was transferred to the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo, where it was operated on.


On Wednesday, at around 4:30 pm, soldiers chased down a Palestinian vehicle. In it they found three sacks of protected plants, and a bleeding doe in the backseat.

The Palestinian told the soldiers he planned to transfer the doe to the relevant bodies in the Palestinian Authority, but the soldiers, who had apprehended the man in the past, were not convinced and contacted the Israel Nature and Parks Authority.




"The doe suffered from an open fracture and was bleeding," said Avim Attar, director of the Parks Authority's Judean Desert section. "One of the soldiers took it back to his base, where a paramedic treated it. In my estimation the deer was hit by a rock or was caught in a trap."



Later that evening the doe was transported by a resident of Alon Shvut to the zoo.

On Thursday the doe was taken to the hospital at the "Safari" Zoological Center Tel Aviv - Ramat Gan, where it will remain for the recovery period.



Attar said he hopes the doe will be able to return to the wild at some point.
