Iran has officially unveiled a long-range sniper rifle and a heavy tactical vehicle manufactured by Iranian military experts.
Commander of the Iranian Army’s Ground Forces Brigadier General Ahmad-Reza Pourdastan attends the unveiling ceremony for Iran’s domestically-manufactured sniper rifle Shaaher, September 29, 2012.
The Shaaher long-range sniper and Neinava tactical vehicle were unveiled during a ceremony in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Saturday, attended by Commander of the Iranian Army’s Ground Forces Brigadier General Ahmad-Reza Pourdastan.
The 14.5 mm-caliber sniper rifle has an effective range of three kilometers (km) and a useful range of four km. The weapon, which is 185 centimeters long and weighs 22 kilograms, requires three operators for efficient use.
Pourdastan told reporters that the 2.5-ton Neinava tactical vehicle is designed to transport troops and equipment.
The vehicle, which boasts a 240-horsepower engine, is seven meters long, 2.5 meters wide and 2.8 meters high, and can carry up to 5 tons of load on ordinary roads and 2.5 tons on all kinds of terrain.
The Iranian commander went on to say that Zolfaqar tanks are among the newest combat vehicles designed and produced by the Army experts.
Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems over the past decades.
On September 24, the Islamic Republic also unveiled Hoveyzeh ultralight armored vehicle and Talaeiyeh armored personnel carrier during a ceremony attended by Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi.

what a piece of crap. 3 operators for effective use? might as well arm them with catapults. also, theres no magazine visible so its likely a one-shot bolt action rifle, meaning the rate of fire sucks also. compare that to the barrett .50, which requires one operator, semi-auto, and 10 round mag.
also, a 2.5 ton tactical vehicle "boasting" a 240hp engine? my honda accord has more hp than that and weighs half as much. these homemade pieces of equipment Iran is so proud of wouldnt e More..

So while Iran is busy making its first sniper rifle and a tactical vehicle with less than 300hp. Really WTF?
U.S is busy designing smart bullets that recognizes its targets faces.
Also designing a drone that can reach hypersonic speeds.
O yeah and robotic terminators. (true stuff!)
So good luck with that "NEW" bulky 1 shot sniper rifle and a vehicle with less horsepower than your average truck in the U.S

That's far from the first 14.5mm rifle. There are Russian and Israeli variants, though as far as I know none among them that are purpose-built for sniping.
It looks much too bulky. Imagine lugging that around on foot. And much depends on how accurate that monster is.
This one looks more portable:

I would think the .50 Barrett is a vastly more practical gun, suited for all the same targets, and probably more accurate.

You sure about that? Perhaps a TomTom strapped in front of the scope is what they consider GPS targeting!
