Perennial philosophical question for photographers -- if we knew the end of the world was imminent -- would we photograph it.
LOL.

Because power sources have to be localized. You know in America we lose 50% of the energy we generate just by transmitting it? It's why wind-farms and solar farms aren't practical.
The next gen nuclear reactors are like you describe though. They're going to be micro reactors (the size of a backyard tool shed), buried under cities.

The eco-nuts will probably exploit this situation in Japan to prevent nuclear plants from being built though. Just like they used Three Mile Island to stop nuclear plants from being built.

Yeah, and taken to the next step at 3 M.I. you would have had hundreds of thousands of people contaminated.
I live aprox. 8 miles from a plant. Its in one of the most populated area's around. The immediate evac.of a 10 mile area would involve hundreds of thoudands of people. 20 to 30 miles would be millions.
Persay something did happen. It wouldnt matter, you'd fry anyway, traffic gridlock would be insane.
Its been over 30 years. I'd say that maybe the REALITY of the problems are more the More..

It's the cleanest and safest practical source of energy we've got. Oil and coal fire power plants kill 30,000 people in America every year.

Still waiting for California to be wiped out. I guess all the Chicken-Littles running around screaming their heads off are just going to kind of pretend like nothing happened when this is over with.

Not yet, maybe next month or October, who knows?
The Americans must be very careful.

Or maybe doomsday scenario isn't going to happen at all? Shame so many reactionary people and reactionary countries will (and already have) use this to set nuclear power another 30 years. Good news for smog lovers.

Kinda like the BP spill..... fishing industry to be ruined for 100 years!!! AHHH!!!!
Then again, that explosion on reactor 3 still has me worried with all the MOX fuel on top of the reactor. Time will tell.

As requested by Japon, Areva (First nuclear plant French builder) and EDF (French main power supplier) specialists are going to Japon to solve this mess, if possible!
