MALTA - Strong with the weak: Police charge 94-year old woman!

Ninety-four year old Yolanda Angileri, who lives in the ground floor of a block of flats currently being demolished by a contractor in Sliema, was astonishingly summoned to Court as police are accusing her of “not removing the danger in the area”, the danger being simply her home.

Ms Angileri received a notice by Court marshals on Tuesday after Architect Joseph Bondin filed a report that the old woman ought to leave her home because she is living in danger. Architect Bondin is also the architect of the developers who are putting the life of Ms Angileri at risk by pulling down the floors above her home.

The developers, Quayside Limited, are using all means to make the old woman abandon her home, so that they can continue demolishing unhindered. They are also trying to chuck out a retailer who owns a mobile phone shop in the same block.

But the old woman has been living in her home at The Strand, Sliema, for 67 years and moving her from her residence could be too much of a shock for her, her family fears.

Last week, maltastar.com reported that a demolitions contractor, engaged by Quayside Limited, the developers of the massive residential project, was pulling down the building, risking to bury the elderly woman alive, if anything goes wrong during the works.

The workers warned Ms Angileri not to use her toilet or kitchen “because stones may fall down and your house can collapse.” The woman was literally trapped inside her home in serious danger. After maltastar.com reports, the Occupational Health and Safety Authority moved in to stop the contractor from damaging the old woman's house any further. The contractor was ordered to build a protective shell around the parts of the home that are in danger of being hit by falling debris.

But this week, in a shocking move, the Police decided to act on the report penned by the developer’s architect and press charges against the old woman. This means that instead of protecting her interests, the Police are summoning a 94-year old woman to court to try and get her out of the home in which she lived for decades.

It is also questionable how Mepa issued a permit for the demolishing of the block when there are persons still living in the ground floor of the same building.

The demolishing works are now at a late stage. To add insult to injury, the contractor's workers are now warning that the vibrations that will arise from the rock cutting required for the foundations, will shake the whole place. This will continue to threaten Yolanda Angileri's small home.
