One of Mexico’s top drug lords was killed in a two-hour gun battle yesterday in one of the biggest victories yet in President Felipe Calderón’s war on drugs.

Arturo Beltran Leyva, the “boss of bosses”, and three members of his cartel were slain in a shoot out with 200 sailors during a Mexican Navy raid on an upmarket apartment complex in Cuernavaca, just south of Mexico City. A fifth cartel member committed suicide during the fight.

    • If you check any SWAT or Military manual... you as representative of authority need to take control of the situation, avoid hurting innocent civilians. The bodyguards doesnt care about anyone even use granedes to keep the militaries away / kill them. If you want to kill them INSIDE an apartment complex is more difficult and requires tactics. Also Lyeva and his bodyguard where heavily armored, more ammo in hand and no fear to die in combat. If you ask a USMC, SAS, Soldier, SWAT etc... this kind o More..

  • Too many times, the common comment about Mexican Law Enforcement is that they are all crooked.

    While there is a good percentage of them that are, it should not be forgotten that there are many fighting the good fight.

    It's truly a war down there and for every scumbag these Mexican agents take down, that keeps the price up in the United States. And that adds up to somewhat holding the line against this plague.

    My hat is off to them.
