Wonton soup and steamed dumplings are common orders from the Chinese restaurants in the West, but I tell you guys those are not real Chinese food. Today I went to one of my local restaurants and order some to show you what real Chinese wonton and dumplings should look like.

Price:

Wonton soup: 8 yuan with 15 wontons

Dumplings: 8 yuan with four dumplings

  • Lake it depends where you go. There are many traditional Chinese rest. in my area that make fine traditional food. You just have to determine which one you like best. The best is the smaller places that are older and owned by older Ma and Pa families that make their food the correct way.

    • @tat2d

I believe so. I was told some Chinese restaurants are run by Mexicans in the States now.

    • @Lake8737 Oh hell yes. and They are awful. Usually on a new place all you need to do it look at the license on the wall, or the employees parking area.
Or they will be owned by Mexicans and work out of site and hire Asians to work in the public area.
We have more Mexican restaurants where I live now than Gas stations.

  • The dumplings are called 'Siu Long Bau'..or Small Dragon Buns, they are filled with minced pork and chives and a delicious soup.

  • Looks the same here most of the time at the proper Chinese restaurants. Wonton casing style varies a little more from place to place I find.
    Thanks as always lake.

  • I'd be scared to order a "real Chinese wonton".
I'm very very happy with my local China Wok's Chinese West food. :^)

  • Chinese restaurants in the United States serve as a channel for new Chinese immigrants to achieve an economic foothold in this country. I've seen restaurants stay open for twenty years or more, turning over both it's management and employees regularly every two years as the folks there learn the English language well enough to move on to better paying jobs or complete university educations.

There was a big spike in the number of restaurants corresponding with immigrant waves. One was in the ear More..

    • @john1054 75& of my diet is Asian food. We have some fine Ma and Pa small restaurants here in Chattanooga. The wife and I have friends who own and operate a very large buffet. They have been "rotating" employees for many many years. Most of the employees go to UTC, or Chatt State and then go home. Many of the "kids" are siblings from one wave to the next. I see nothing wrong with that at all. Those kids work long hours and still go to school.
