@cincy32 A man lighting himself on fire sparked off revolutions that toppled the governments of Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and possibly Syria.
The key is timing and doing it in a dramatic enough way to seriously get people to notice your plight.
Unfortunately for the Tibetans, so many people have set themselves aflame that its now treated as a regular event, so much so that Chinese police patrols now carry fire extinguishers in addition to their side arms.

@fludblud Would you say that the Arab Spring has been beneficial for those involved? Earlier on it looked like it held a lot of promise, but now it's shown itself to be more trouble than it was worth - for the countries involved and their neighbors.

@cincy32 True, but the thing about popular revolutions is that they are generally done by the majority of the people.
If it all turns out terrible, they really have nobody but themselves to blame and any leader that does emerge can simply legitimise his rule as delivering his nation from chaos.
