After the amazing success of the first "Star Wars" movie in 1977 ($750,000,000 gross worldwide),George Lucas had a blank check to make the next two sequels. After directing "Star Wars: A New Hope" in 1977, along with all its attendant headaches, Lucas chose director Irvin Kirshner to direct and retained control of the final production in his role as executive producer and story creator/editor.
