The oil keeps Canada warm while the Brits freeze with high heating cost.

That's a lot of oil. I'm surprised the US government hasn't found WMD's in Canada and invaded our country.

Nice post. The amount of oil in the oil sand mine is just enormous.

@2Phast4Rocket Yes but the ratio of oil to sand is very small so the quantity of sand being mined and the destruction of the land is staggering.

Yeaaaah buddy! I work in that mines little brother a few miles away, I can see the syncrude stacks from where I am these weeks.
Driving on the haul roads with the heavy haulers is pretty intense the first time. It does stink in the mine but you get used to it.
Worst part is the dust and the heat right now, Theres 12 ft berms on all the roads in the mine so stringing pipe in 32 degrees seems more like 36, truck says 39... Its deady, I drink 6 L of water a day and usually dont piss.
I ca More..

I love how they throw in their little environmental tree-hugger slams every chance they get. Hey NatGeo, quit pushing your agenda and just tell the story.

That is the typical liberal brainwash moment. They can't fathom oil sand mining create many well paying jobs and grow the economy.

@NateyG2 Why does "conservative" equate to destroying the earth as carelessly as possible for profit? Do you not live on the same fucking planet the rest of us do?

@NateyG2 If you equate all references to the environmental impact with tree huggers you need a more balanced view. With a mine the size of Florida and the use of a river which feeds many Native communities downstream, it would be unwise to deny the consequences of these exploitations on the lives of all indigenous species: caribou, bears, moose, small mammals and all kinds of fish and birds. It is by the destruction of habitat that species die. If migrating birds find only toxic waters to land i More..

@2Phast4Rocket I am neiter lib nor conservative. I approach every problem without party bias. The excuse that any activity can be justified by job creation is short sighted. The consequences of these mines will be felt centuries after the last drop has been squeezed out. It may be politically expedient to approve this activity but already the Natives have had lots of deaths due to cancer which didn't happen before the exploitation of tar sands started.

@oldboy6o4 Yeah, the video doesn't show men working outdoors in the dead of winter. I wish it had shown how life is for them and what they do for recreation.
